Private one to one yoga in Basingstoke, at your own pace.

One person, one room, nobody watching. I teach gently and slowly, and the practice is built around whatever your body is doing that day.

No classes. No timetable to keep up with. No back row, because there is no row.

This might be you

Most of the people I teach came to me because a class did not work for them. Some had never tried yoga at all.

  • You have been told you are "not flexible enough", usually by yourself.
  • You are practising with back pain, an injury, or a recovery that is taking its time.
  • You are going through menopause and your body feels unfamiliar.
  • A room full of people makes you anxious before you have even parked.
  • You tried a class once, felt watched, and never went back.
  • Getting down to the floor is the bit you are worried about. We can work standing or in a chair.

How a first session works

  1. You send me a message

Tell me roughly what you are hoping for and anything you are worried about. I read and reply to every message myself.

  2. We talk first

A short phone call or a few emails, whichever you prefer. We cover what is going on with your body and what you would like to feel different.

  3. We practise, privately

Just the two of us. We start slowly, and you can stop or change anything at any point. I will confirm where to come and what to bring beforehand.

Hello, I'm Claire

I teach one person at a time, in person, here in Basingstoke. It is how I like to teach, and it is the only way I teach.

Working with one person means I can watch how you actually move, rather than how a room of twelve people roughly moves. If something does not suit your knees, we change it. If today is a bad day, we do less. [TO CONFIRM, Claire's own words]

About

Hello, I'm Claire. I teach one person at a time.

I run CMC Yoga in Basingstoke. Every session is private: just you and me, in a room with the door shut.

I chose to teach this way because it is where I have seen people relax. In a class, most people spend the first ten minutes checking what everyone else is doing. Here, there is no one to check.

Why I teach this way

Most of the people who come to me are not what anyone would call a yoga person. They are managing a bad back, or recovering from an operation, or they have reached a point where their body does not do what it used to and nobody has offered them a sensible way back into moving.

A group class asks you to fit the shape of the class. A private session works the other way round. If you cannot kneel, we do not kneel. If standing for long is uncomfortable, we sit. If today is worse than last week, we do less, and that is a perfectly good session.

I am slow. I explain things in ordinary words. I will tell you what we are doing and why before we do it, and you can say no to any of it. [TO CONFIRM: replace with Claire's own account of how she came to teach]

I teach yoga. I am not a medical practitioner, and nothing here is treatment or medical advice. If you are under the care of a doctor or a physiotherapist, it is worth mentioning that you are starting yoga, and I am happy to work alongside anything they have asked you to do.

One to one sessions

Private yoga lessons in Basingstoke

One person, one room, no audience. I do not teach group classes, so nobody else will be there and nobody is waiting for you to keep up.

Sessions are gentle and slow paced, and every one of them is adapted to your body on the day.

What happens the first time, in order

  1. Before you arriveI send you the address, parking details and what to wear. Nothing special: something you can move in.
  2. The first ten minutes, sitting downWe talk. What hurts, what you avoid, what you are hoping for, anything a doctor or physio has said. You keep your shoes on for this part.
  3. We start moving, slowlyUsually seated or standing to begin with. I say what we are doing and why. If you would rather not do something, we skip it and I will not ask twice.
  4. A few minutes of rest at the endLying down if that is comfortable, sitting or supported if it is not. No chanting, no incense, nothing you have to join in with.
  5. AfterwardsWe have a quick chat about what felt good and what did not, and I write you a couple of simple things to try at home if you want them.

How I adapt a practice to a body

Props do most of the work: blocks, a strap, a bolster, cushions, and a sturdy chair. They are there so a shape fits you, rather than you stretching to fit the shape.

If getting down to the floor is difficult or worrying, we can practise entirely standing and seated. If you can get down but not back up easily, we plan that in.

You can ask me to stop at any point in a session, for any reason, and you never have to explain why.

Who it's for

Yoga for beginners, and for bodies in pain

If you have been putting off yoga because of something on this page, you are exactly who I teach.

"I'm not flexible."

Neither are most people who start. Flexibility is not the entry requirement, it is one of the things that slowly changes if you want it to. Nothing we do needs you to touch your toes.

"I'm too old to start."

Plenty of the people I teach started in their sixties and seventies. Because it is one to one, the pace is yours and nobody is going faster in the next row.

"I've got a bad back."

Then we build the session around it. I will ask what makes it worse and we will avoid those things. Slow, small movements, well supported.

"I can't get down onto the floor."

Then we do not use the floor. A whole session can happen standing, seated, or using a chair for support, and it is still a proper practice.

"I'll be the worst one there."

There is no one else there. That is the whole point of how I teach. No mirrors, no rows, nobody glancing over.

Practising with something specific

Questions people ask before they get in touch

Can I do yoga if I'm not flexible?

Yes. Flexibility is not needed to start, and every shape can be made smaller or propped up so it fits you as you are today.

Can I do yoga with a bad back?

Many people do. We talk through what makes yours worse before we move, we avoid those things, and we keep everything slow and well supported. If you are under a doctor or physiotherapist, do mention that you are starting.

Is yoga safe after surgery?

That is a question for the person who did your surgery, and I will happily wait until you have been cleared to exercise. Once you have, we start very gently and build from there.

Am I too old to start?

No. One to one means the session is set at your pace rather than the room's, which is usually what makes the difference.

What if I can't get down onto the floor?

We can work entirely standing and seated, with a chair for support. You will not be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with.

Will anyone else be there?

No. Sessions are private, one person at a time, and I do not run group classes.

Common questions

{{ f.q }}

{{ f.a }}

I teach yoga rather than treat conditions, so nothing here is medical advice. If a health professional is already helping you, I am glad to work alongside what they have asked you to do.

Workshops and retreats

A few times a year, in a small group

Alongside the one to one work I run the occasional half day workshop and, now and then, a longer retreat.

They are small and unhurried, and nobody is put on the spot. If you have been practising privately and feel curious about being around other people doing the same thing, this is a gentle way in. It is entirely optional. Plenty of people stay one to one and that is completely fine.

In the diary

Nothing in the diary right now.

Join the list and I will let you know when the next one is set. It is a short email, a few times a year, and nothing else.

Contact

Tell me a bit about what you're hoping for

I read every message myself and I reply myself, usually within a day or two. There is no reception desk and no automated anything.

You do not need to know what you want yet. "I have a bad back and I have never done yoga" is a perfectly good first message.

Sessions are in Basingstoke, Hampshire. I share the full address once your session is confirmed.

What happens next

I write back with a few questions, we agree a time that suits you, and I send you everything you need to know beforehand. No payment until we have spoken.

Thank you, your message is on its way.

I will reply myself, usually within a day or two. If it is urgent, do send it again and I will not mind.
